9 days in Thailand |

photo15 3.jpg

It’s quite a lot of fun traveling to Thailand during off-peak season! There’s no lines for us to wait in. Every place we stayed at we got upgraded (had our own private pool and beach access), every activity we booked turned into a private event, plus the weather was so mild that we forgot we were traveling in Southeast Asia!

We ran into some hiccups prior to leaving for Thailand. First UN didn’t get our approved travel documents until a couple days before our departure date. The day of departure, our flight got cancelled due to a typhoon. But PTL we were safe, and were still able to go on our trip.

We had a check list of things that we wanted to cross off for this trip. We wanted to visit an elephant sanctuary, go diving, and meet up with my relatives. We made the most out of our 9 days there and completed our list. So impressed with UN’s trip planning skills!

Bangkok |

So happy to have met up with my uncle and his family, whom I haven’t seen for more than 10 years! Due to weather, our trip was cut short by 2 days, but big shout-out to my uncle for taking us around to eat delicious Thai foods and tour Bangkok and Pattaya!

Raan Jay Fai

The only time we lined up for anything in Thailand during our 9-day stay was for this. Waited for four hours, we even made friends with fellow customers who were waiting beside us. The food was so delicious that I often dream about it. Even as I write this post right now, I can still remember the taste of Jay Fai’s food in my mouth. So glad we decided to wait for it. Please contact me for the detailed waiting story. If you can, I recommend making reservation at least three months ahead of time (jayfaibangkok@gmail.com)!

Chiang Mai | 清邁

When the elephants were drawn by the foods we have prepared for them, that moment felt more magical than Disneyland. Searching for a legitimate elephant sanctuary was the most homework I’ve done for any trip. There are so many so called “sanctuaries” in Thailand that are actually tourist traps. Some still justify their treatment of elephants as “humane” to appease their unknowing tourists. Even some big name resorts would partner up with these shady elephant tourism companies to make money off of these poor elephants. As someone who loves elephants so much, I felt obligated to do through research on the elephant sanctuary that I wanted to visit.

Elephant Nature Park

At ENP, the elephants roam free, you don’t see the mahoots force elephants to do anything. At the fish pond, we thought the elephants would take a bath, but they went into the mud to play instead. I am usually clean freak, but I had a lot of fun with the elephants that day. I remember learning in school that in a lot of ways elephants are like humans, after interacting with them that day, I definitely felt closer to them more than ever before. Thai government doesn’t have much regulation on what constitute as an elephant sanctuary, so your information must rely on reviews, first hand information from park goers and volunteers. If you have any question about ENP, please feel free to reach out!

photo22 3.jpg

Asia Cooking Class

Off-peak season booking means we were the only patrons. Our private class included a trip to the local market. The fruit stands definitely caught most of our attention there. They have mangosteens, mangoes, rambutans, and durians! After the trip to market, we went back to their organic farm to pick our ingredients, totally farm-to-table.

Lila Thai Massage

In Thailand, getting a massage everyday is a must. Our favorite was this one in Chiang Mai that employs women who are ex-cons, train them with a skill and provide them with a means of earning money so they can integrate back into society. The massage parlor is clean, and the staff are very professional. Will definitely come back for more massages!

Pattaya |

There aren’t many cities where I didn’t have any urge to take out my camera. Pattaya, the sex capitol of the world, is one of them. Being off-peak season, there aren’t as many tourists visiting, many “working ladies” would line up along the boardwalk of Pattaya beach to attract potential clients. It was such a cultural sock to us that we didn’t know how to document our visit here. Not sure if we will return, but really hope that tourists will stop commodifying women.

Phuket |

First time in Phuket, reminds us a great deal of Mallorca. Perfect for honeymooners! I have just right itinerary for you! Book a scenic and dreamy resort, take the hotel shuttle into downtown and walk around. Take a break and relax at the beach. Maybe explore snorkeling or scuba diving. Treat yourself to a two-hour Thai massage. Eat, play, massage and repeat.

Aussie Divers Shop

Did you read my last post about diving certificate? This was our first dive since getting certified. Also our first boat dive. Highly recommend Aussie Divers! We dove  for three times at Phi Phi Island and Shark Point. We saw sharks!

9 Spots We Love in Tokyo | 9

photo4 4.jpg
photo24 2.jpg

Within 12 hours of getting back to Okinawa from Taiwan, we were on the plane again, this time to Tokyo. The only thing that we had planned for our 9 day trip to Tokyo was Disney Sea to celebrate my birthday. Below are nine places that we loved from our impromptu 2-week Tokyo trip.

Chatei Hatou

Even though I don’t drink coffee, I love brewing coffee for UN (he’s my guinea pig). UN knows that I am a sucker for hole-in-the-wall cafes, so he found this gem in Shibuya for us to recharge and plan our trip. We wanted to try everything on the menu. The only downside to this cafe is that it allows indoor smoking, and can be annoying to those who are sensitive to cigarette smoke.

photo22 2.jpg

Kawaguchiko

There are many options to view Mt. Fuji here, including taking a boat or a tram. It was a cloudy day, so we couldn’t see Mt. Fuji in its full glory, but we still were mesmerized by nature’s scenery. Once you get off the tram, there’s a short and easy hiking trail. We prefer the view from up here than that of the tall buildings in Tokyo city. Our hope is to climb Mt. Fuji next year. Tip: if you come here on the weekend or during holiday, take the train instead of the bus, so your trip doesn’t get delayed by traffic.

photo9 3.jpg

teamLab Borderless

A perfect place for digital art lovers! We had planned on being here for only 3 hours, turned out to be the whole day. Lost count of how many times we went on the slide here, and trust me, you will love it too! There is also a tea room where your drink comes to life and interacts with you. Remember to wear comfortable shoes to enhance your experience here.

photo17 2.jpg

Hakone

A typhoon touched down in Tokyo the day we travelled to Hakone, which makes a perfect day for staying in our ryokan and enjoying unlimited hot spring. Must buy the hot spring eggs! Rumor has it that you extend your life by 7 years every egg you eat. From Shinjuku to Hakone takes about 1 1/2 hours on the train, don’t forget to book the Odakyu Limited Express Romancecar ahead of time, select seats in the observation deck (Carriage No. 10, row 12) for a panoramic view the entire way to Hakone. In addition, purchase Hakone Freepass for unlimited rides on local public transportation such as buses, trolleys, trains, tram, and pirate ship. Included in the Hakone Freepass are free or discounted admission to various attractions.

Sukiyabashi Jiro

UN surprised me Big Time on my birthday! Also shout out to Park Hyatt Tokyo for helping us find a reservation at Sukiyabashi Sushi Jiro on my birthday! Many of my friends asked me what I thought of the experience. My limited vocabulary makes it difficult to describe every emotion that I was experiencing at the moment. A part of me still feels like it was a dream. Let’s just say we couldn’t eat sushi the same way afterwards.

photo10 3.jpg

Tonkatsu Katsuzen

I may be exaggerating, but this is by far the juiciest tonkatsu that I have ever tasted! UN insisted on coming here, and we’ve decided to make this our must eat place when we come back to Tokyo. Please remember us chef! We love you (and your tonkatsu)!

photo20 2.jpg

Tsuta

If there’s anything UN can eat all day and every day, it’s ramen. Tsuta has a complicated ticketing system, but if you come after 5pm, you simply line up outside. We only waited for about 15 minutes in line before getting seated. Their soup base in Truffle ramen is beyond magical!

Tokyo National Museum

If you have to pick just one museum to visit, this is it! It reminds me of The Met in NYC, you too can easily get lost here for a whole day.

photo8 3.jpg

Tokyo Disneysea

Not even a toothache can stop me from enjoying all the delicious snacks here in DisneySea. Alien mochi, different flavors of popcorn, coffee jelly milkshake, and so much more that you won’t have time to finish eating them all, let alone go on the rides. Please refer to my post dedicated to DisneySea!

Accommodations

New Sanno

Before coming to Japan, we have heard about New Sanno through various military forums! It is affiliated with US Military, conveniently located in Roppongi, affordable and yet high quality amenities (spacious room, large swimming pool, and has an Exchange!) If you are a member of the US Armed Forces, this place is highly recommended!

Hyatt Centric Ginza

This is one of our favorite places to stay at this trip! UN says it feels like home. A short three minute walk to Ginza station, very convenient.

Manatei Hakone

Change into your bathrobe right away, and immerse yourself in the hot spring. The beautiful scenery makes you feel like you’re one with nature. We are in love with Hakone! They even have rooms with private hot spring. It’s merely steps away from the closest bus stop.

Hyatt Place Tokyo Bay

Grand opening in July, has “2nd Night Free” offer valid through 12/20/2019! Hotel has free shuttle to and from Tokyo Disney every 20 minutes. The rooms are spacious, and there’s even a Lawson convenient located inside the lobby!

Park Hyatt Tokyo

Fall asleep and wake up to the magnificent Tokyo city view here! Equipped with luxurious swimming pool, fitness center, and fine dining.

One Sunday after church we went south to Naha. Maybe because it was too hot, we didn’t spend too much time at 國際通。We went to the less populated ceramic street instead. I love this place, jokingly hoping some of our bowls and dishes would break from our PCS move so that I can replace them!

I saw so many ceramics that I like, but ended up not buying any, decided to wait till our place is fully settled in to come back here. We talked about how ceramics used to not excite us, but now we can spend a whole afternoon browsing through ceramic shops after ceramic shops. Maybe it’s because we have our own place now and we want to nicely decorate it.
